The construction sector accounts for 7.6% of GDP and employs over 2.3 million workers across the UK, including over 900,000 self-employed workers. Like many sectors, construction experienced a record decline of 40.2% in output in April 2020 due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. However, the sector saw a growth of 8.2% in May. In June, the Prime Minister announced that the government will accelerate over £5 billion of infrastructure projects to support economic recovery and transform UK infrastructure. The government plans to boost productivity through infrastructure and there are likely to be many new programmes of activity that support and create jobs.
